Patrick Swayze
“You just put your pickle on everybody’s plate, college boy, and leave the hard stuff to me.” – Dirty Dancing
Is it just me or has this been a horrible year for celebrities? Especially celebrities who I grew up watching or listening to. This one is, by far, the saddest for me. The Outsiders, Red Dawn
, North and South
, Youngblood
, Dirty Dancing
, Ghost
, Point Break
, and the most awesomely bad movie ever, Road House
.
I used to read about Patrick Swayze in teen magazines. It was a constant internal struggle trying to decide between him and Kevin Bacon when I was a teenager. I even have a picture of a poster on my wall to prove it. Excuse the poor quality, it was 1986…

I have no idea why he was wearing overalls and I didn’t care. I used to have dreams about him riding that horse in North and South. I spared you and cropped myself out of this picture. It was awful. I was dressed in full-on ’80’s garb and making some weird face with my eyes closed. What also got cropped out was the canopy bed and stuffed animals that were in my room too. This period of time was when I had lots of crushes on celebrities and boys at school but also couldn’t part with my stuffed animals. The bridge between childhood and adulthood. He was a huge part of that.
I know enough about Pancreatic Cancer to know the prognosis is usually not good. I still had hope, since he was a celebrity with money and connections, that he would find some alternative cure that would work. I’m sad that he’s gone, and with him, another piece of my adolescence.
Thanks for stopping by!

break my heart… i was stunned when i found out yesterday. and yes, i feel like you are writing one of these tributes every few weeks….
pancreatic cancer is a Killer. no cure, no hope. only 2% make it one year past diagnosis. i had a friend who died of it within 2 months of diagnosis — she was 35, her son not yet 2, daughter not yet 5… she tried everything. awful disease.
if anyone wants to learn more, this is the best organization: http://www.pancan.org/
Patrick Swayze was definitely a special actor/dancer. Terribly sad, so very young.
i am so sad! i was one of those girls who saw dirty dancing like a hundred times and had a poster of him in my room. he was damn hot that man. prayers out to his family and friends!
Patrick Swayze … oh, I loved him in the movie, Ghost. His death reminds me of a few other great people, like Randy Pausch, and my son Joe’s grandmother who died just a year ago.
Grateful to those who have touched so many lives in beautiful ways.
i hate that pancreatic leaves them in such pain at the end. apparently he was screaming & writhing in pain at the end. what a horrible way to have to watch your loved one die. my prayers are going out to his fam, esp his wife lisa.
Yes, he entertained us in many ways! Patrick will be missed by many. His time here was done and now he moves on …
I knew you’d have a post on him. It’s sad when such a talent leaves us–and especially one that seemed to be such a decent person, so unlike some of the Hollywood jerks.
Patrick Swayze was a big deal in my adolescence as well. It’s so sad to be saying goodbye to all these icons of our childhoods. Reminds me of just how fragile and fleeting my own life is.
Today,on my way to work, i read the news. Can’t recollect when i saw his movies first, remember a sort of adoration. For a moment i was also thinking ….there goes another star.
I was so sad to hear that he was gone! It sucks that all the people that I’ve grown up with (Michael Jackson in particular) are passing away. It just reminds me that I’m getting older.
