I’ve been looking into it too with pretty much the same results. I found one yesterday that paid $5 per week, just like you said, and you get paid the following month. So….you work for an entire month for $20 and probably don’t ever even get the $20. I’m definitely going to get the book you recommended (and your book) today. Thanks for all the info!

Mom, I have been looking into some of the online job sites for freelance writers, like elance and guru. So far I haven’t been impressed, and you’re bidding against people in Third-World countries who work for peanuts. First, they charge you either a monthly fee or a percentage of the take for access to the best jobs, but I’d say 99% of the work is low-paying crap. Like “I need someone to write five 2,000-word articles in a week for $5 each.” Less than slave wages.

If anyone is actually making a living off these sites, I’d like to hear from them.

So many work-at-home deals ARE scams. I knew a woman once who was doing medical transcription at home through a local company. She delivered a lot of work, then never got paid. Only later when she went to the BBB did she find out that the company’s modus operandi was to hire a steady stream of naive freelancers it then stiffed after getting the work done.

I think a lot of home-based jobs spring out of a “real” job that turns into telecommuting. But you have to put in the time on-site first.

The best way to work at home and know it’s on the level is to do it yourself. Start your own business with whatever talent you have. The biggest challenge is putting yourself out there so people know about you. That book I mentioned in my earlier comment tells you step-by-step how to do it. I’m no salesman myself, but I swallowed my innate shyness long enough to build a customer base, and now much of my work comes from referrals. (Although in this recession, I am back to doing some cold-calling.)

Marketing is not my cup of tea either. However, as you like writing, you can do online freelance writing. Or you can search the local newspaper for freelance writing and proofreading work. Freelancing can offer you more freedom and flexibility than the regular 9-5 job.
