Make $$ From Home – Start TODAY!
“I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.” – Say Anything
Speaking of my current and prolonged unemployed status…I’ve been actively looking for LEGITIMATE ways to work from home.
I do have some friends who have actual office jobs where they telecommute (corporate jargon, just a more professional sounding way of saying, “work from home”) a couple days a week or even every day, only going into the office for meetings. This would be a great situation for me. So far, no luck. I’d also like to do some freelance writing or even something in the mortgage business where I could work from my home office.
As I mentioned in my last post, I do enjoy the flexibility that being at home offers me, especially because I don’t have to put my kids in daycare and can be around for them more often. I love being here in the morning and taking them to school and then being here when they get home. It makes me a better mom. It also allows me more time to study and hopefully complete college faster than if I had a regular 9-5 job. If it weren’t for the lack of income, I would actually be loving this.
Unfortunately, most of what I’m finding out there sound like scams. You have to sign up, and pay for, some monthly “program” that is described in only the vaguest of terms. Usually, you are promised that you can set your own schedule and that you determine how much money you’d like to make.
I don’t want to sell anything, host home parties or recruit anyone. I’m talking about flipping real estate (yes, some are still claiming this is a viable option even in this market) insurance, jewelry, candles, home decorating products, home cleaning products, cooking supplies, etc. No, selling is not for me.
I’m sure I’ll be bombarded with these types of offers simply due to the title of this post. Are there actually any legitimate work from home opportunities like I’ve described, out there?
Thanks for stopping by!

Mom, I left a 9-5 cubicle job on February 1, 2002, to work from home full-time. How did I do it? I read a book called “The Well-Fed Writer” by Peter Bowerman. Twice. On my lunch hour.
He’s a guy in Atlanta with a sales background who became a freelance commercial writer, and he laid out exactly how he did it. I followed his model and was paying my bills within 6 months from my new career. And I have never looked back at Corporate America.
It’s in paperback. I’m sure you can get it on Amazon, or visit http://www.wellfedwriter.com.
He’s also got a sequel with more tips called “Back for Seconds,” and a 3rd book called “The Well-Fed Self-Publisher,” which chronicles how he self-published the first 2 books.
The guy’s on the level and he doesn’t hold anything back.
If you’re really serious about working from home, and being a writer, this is the quickest (and quickest-paying) way to do it.

Um Hello! Sign me up!
I am a big fan of not having to dress up and fight traffic every way!
I was going to advertise and actually try to expand my home-based tax business beyond the clients (mostly friends and relatives) I already have. That was right before I found my current job with a CPA firm. It’s really nice working from home. However, it is SO much less stressful doing the returns and letting my boss be responsible for any errors (rarely, ahem) or more often, have to deal with any stupid IRS letters that may come our way (usually IRS errors–no lie).
You are so not going to believe that I’ve started looking into this too are you? OMG…LOL I’ve seen some things on news channels and online and these are a few of the results.
Under msn money there is an article about real work from home jobs here are the company names that are currently hiring: Alpine AccessLive OPSAriseWest at home

Don’t know if this is what you’re looking for but…Good Luck!
No kidding. I had the same experience. Everything that promised to be legit was a big scam. Good luck to you!
Wow…
Love that quote that you posted on the top! How fitting!
Marketing is not my cup of tea either. However, as you like writing, you can do online freelance writing. Or you can search the local newspaper for freelance writing and proofreading work. Freelancing can offer you more freedom and flexibility than the regular 9-5 job.
Cool post. I’m speaking for the voice in you that says you want to be a write and earn money doing it. Obvious to me you are already a writer. I secretly think you enjoy sharing knowledge.
Go find some blog friends that are writers. Here’s one I found on twitter yesterday: http://www.theinsanewriter.com/ (I thought you’d love the name!)
Mom, I have been looking into some of the online job sites for freelance writers, like elance and guru. So far I haven’t been impressed, and you’re bidding against people in Third-World countries who work for peanuts. First, they charge you either a monthly fee or a percentage of the take for access to the best jobs, but I’d say 99% of the work is low-paying crap. Like “I need someone to write five 2,000-word articles in a week for $5 each.” Less than slave wages.
If anyone is actually making a living off these sites, I’d like to hear from them.
So many work-at-home deals ARE scams. I knew a woman once who was doing medical transcription at home through a local company. She delivered a lot of work, then never got paid. Only later when she went to the BBB did she find out that the company’s modus operandi was to hire a steady stream of naive freelancers it then stiffed after getting the work done.
I think a lot of home-based jobs spring out of a “real” job that turns into telecommuting. But you have to put in the time on-site first.
The best way to work at home and know it’s on the level is to do it yourself. Start your own business with whatever talent you have. The biggest challenge is putting yourself out there so people know about you. That book I mentioned in my earlier comment tells you step-by-step how to do it. I’m no salesman myself, but I swallowed my innate shyness long enough to build a customer base, and now much of my work comes from referrals. (Although in this recession, I am back to doing some cold-calling.)

The Writer’s Market 2009 — might be at the library by now.
Work at home scams are everywhere
Wow, thank you!
I’m sure there are downsides. A major one for me would be time management. But, I’d still like to give it a shot.
Of course I believe it! We are living parallel lives after all.
Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out.
Great movie too!
I do love the name, thank you! And I do enjoy sharing knowledge, just not sure I actually have any to share!
I’ve been looking into it too with pretty much the same results. I found one yesterday that paid $5 per week, just like you said, and you get paid the following month. So….you work for an entire month for $20 and probably don’t ever even get the $20. I’m definitely going to get the book you recommended (and your book) today. Thanks for all the info!
Damnit! I just got back from the library. Thanks, I’ll check it out next time.
