Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations

2008 December 29

“What can I say, I happen to be an aficionado of the dive bar.”- Anthony Bourdain

I’m not normally a fan of travel shows and definitely hardly ever watch food shows.  There is one major exception though, that combines both and that I watch regularly.  It’s Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.  Ever seen it?

If not, I highly recommend that you check it out.  Anthony Bourdain is a best-selling author and highly respected chef.  His travel/food show is different than others for many reasons.

First of all, he liberally sprinkles his dialogue with profanity and sexual references.  During some episodes he is bleeped multiple times.  There is a parental discretion notice for mature audiences at the beginning of each show and upon the return from each commercial break.

He smokes two packs a day and loves beer.  In one of my favorite episodes, he’s about to pass out in a hammock on a beautiful beach somewhere and happily proclaims, “Look!  It’s beer o’clock!” and then literally passes out, dropping his unfinished beer onto a pile of empty beer bottles.

He describes himself frequently as “snarky”, which truly does sum up his attitude.  Although, he often shows a softer side when confronted with cultures and individuals regularly living under less than fabulous conditions at the locations his visits.

He tries to visit the non-touristy places in even the most touristy countries.  He frowns upon your average hotel, cruise ships, tours and Rachael Ray.  He will eat virtually anything but his favorite, no matter where he goes is pork.

I just love this show and this man.  He’s on my “list”.  I love his dark, caustic humor, liberal views, sense of adventure, and complete and utter disdain for mainstream…anything.

I haven’t read his book, Kitchen Confidential yet, but it is now at the top of my to-read list.  Being such a book-nerd, I can’t believe it took me finding a show on the travel channel completely by accident to even hear about what sounds like a book that I will enjoy tremendously.

Thanks for stopping by!
