WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS "BAD" WORDS

2008 December 4

“I’ve been accused of vulgarity. I say that’s bullshit.” — Mel Brooks

“Speech on the Internet can be unfiltered, unpolished, and unconventional, even emotionally charged, sexually explicit, and vulgar- in a word, ‘indecent,’ in many communities. But we should expect such speech to occur in a medium in which citizens from all walks of life have a voice. We should also protect the autonomy that such a medium confers to ordinary people as well as media magnates.”
— District Judge Stewart Dalzell, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of PA, in ACLU vs. Re

Yes, I had to include both quotes in this post.  I just couldn’t pick one and they are both brilliant and directly related to what I have to say.

First off, I need to preface this story with a little bit of psycho-babble.  I LOVE my blog.  If no one else ever read it, I would still love it but I also LOVE that people read it and give me feedback.  It is my journal, my diary, my safe-place.  It is where I can say whatever I want whenever I want.  It represents to me freedom, creativity and has become an essential part of my life.  I’m not exaggerating one bit.

Having said that, I had a bizarre and offensive conversation via e-mail today with a complete stranger who was able to contact me through a networking site.  This person read my post, entitled, What’s Important and was offended by the words, “fucking, hell and whores”.  Now, if you read that post, these words are all used in specific context.  In fact, “fucking” wasn’t even mine, it was part of a quote I used from a movie you may have heard of, Jerry Maguire.

This person first had the balls to ask if I used this type of language around my kids, then claimed using this type of language in my blog was inappropriate for the networking site, and finally offered unsolicited advice about how I shouldn’t use this type of language since I’m trying to find a job.

At no point did I ever find out why this jackass was so concerned for my kids or my job search or even for the networking site.  It was baffling on so many levels that a perfect stranger would decide to spend quite a bit of time today in setting me straight on some arbitrary definition of what the fuck is appropriate for me to fucking post on my own fucking blog that no one is fucking forced to read in the first fucking place.

The most absurd thing though, was that the overall message of that post was about reclaiming personal integrity and that people are more important than financial gain.  It was a pretty positive and upbeat message that I took from Jerry Maguire and applied to the mortgage business.  But this asshole didn’t ever once comment on the message or content of the 647 word post, just focused on those 3 “inappropriate” words AND felt the need to set me (again, we are perfect strangers – don’t know each other and have no friends in common) straight.  What a mother-fucking-piece-of-shit-holier-than-thou-pompous-self-righteous-judgmental-bastard.

After telling this person to go fuck himself and to quit e-mailing me, I received one more damned e-mail claiming he was just trying to help me with my job search.  What the fuck??!!

Where do these people get off?  Now, I can curse like a truck-driver, as I think I have adequately demonstrated in this post (although I still have a few that I have to squeeze in here).  But I do understand that this type of language (i.e. cocksucker, fuckwad, shithead, etc…see, I told you I’d get some more in) offends some people.  I don’t normally go balls-out like I did in this post, using fuck, shit, damn, etc. this excessively.  However, I will not be censored on my own blog and I don’t blame those who simply don’t like it.  But those people, like the one who lectured me today via e-mail, should simply not read it.  Just like they can change the channel when they don’t like what’s on TV, they can do the same with my damn blog.  They can read more important things….the U.S. Constitution for example.

Thanks for fucking stopping by!

I *do* use that kind of language in front of my daughter (she’s 4 years old). Obviously, this isn’t the norm, but eh… my parents curse more than I do, especially my dad, and I knew half a dozen filthy limericks by the time I started Kindergarten.

I’m not scarred for life. By the time I started school, I understood perfectly well that certain words and phrases were only for use at home.

As for my daughter, she understands that there are some words she shouldn’t say in public, and she doesn’t. We’ve only had one incident, when she said “fuck” in front of my husband’s parents… she was a bit confused as to why being around that particular set of grandparents was considered “public”, but she accepted it without any drama.
