Flying Solo ~ Part III
I had no clue where to go. What I did have were several criteria. Most importantly, I had to be on the ocean. I love everything about the beach…the smell, the sounds, the feel….everything. Of course, in order to fully enjoy the beach, I wanted to go somewhere warm. It was May in the Midwest so still pretty cold here. I was only going for four days so i didn’t want to go anywhere too far away and waste most of my time traveling. I also didn’t want to go anywhere that hubby would be interested in going, since he wasn’t invited this time. And finally, a hot tub. Had to have a hot tub in my room.
These criterion narrowed it down to the southeastern part of the U.S. I excluded Florida immediately…been there, done that, several times. Plus, I was looking for at least partial seclusion. I didn’t want anything too touristy. Georgia? Not an option either. The only place in Georgia I want to visit is Savannah, and hubby wants to go there too. That left South Carolina and North Carolina. I briefly entertained the idea of Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head. Too expensive AND too touristy.
At this point I have to make an embarrassing confession. I’ve read more Nicholas Sparks books than I care to publicly admit. I know, I know…sappy romance novels churned out faster than anything coming off of any assembly line anywhere. I told you it was embarrassing! Anyway, he makes North Carolina sound like the most beautiful place on Earth and so I developed a curiosity for the Wilmington area. Yes, based on his descriptions, and also on the fact that many TV shows and movies have been filmed there. Unfortunately, Wilmington isn’t on the ocean.
After some internet research, I finally decided on Carolina Beach. It’s about 30 minutes from Wilmington, a small town, wouldn’t be crowded due to the time of year, and I found an ocean-front room in a nice hotel with a hot tub! I booked it and then proceeded to spend more than three weeks thinking of virtually nothing else. I hadn’t been so excited since I don’t know when! The countdown began….
